Discover Switzerland
Monocle’s fifth handbook is a practical and inspirational guide to one of Europe’s most admired nations. We’ve crossed the country by rail, swum in its lakes, hiked to remote mountain villages and cut across its best Alpine slopes to show you what makes Switzerland tick. And for those considering a move, we also highlight the neighbourhoods and cantons worth knowing – and the areas of that are full of opportunity if you’re looking to set up shop.

Tempo (Tempo Design Store, Mastermade Goods)
Rue du Midi 11, Lausanne, Switzerland
Setting up shop in the Swiss Alps in 2017 was a result of the many travels of business partners Pablo de Pinho and Ana Deffarges. “It’s rare to find lifestyle shops with a smart international selection in Switzerland,” says De Pinho. “We knew Lausanne was missing something.” The result is a collection featuring items from furniture ateliers including Copenhagen-based Frama and Bangalore’s Phantom Hands. There are leather goods from Tokyo’s Hender Scheme and wicker from Taiwan’s Kamaro’an, plus menswear from École de Pensée. The showroom itself is an inviting space with hardwood floors, large windows and Scandinavian lighting and furniture.
