From Okayama, Japan, Tanuki focuses on small-batch selvedge denim using the best materials, antique shuttle looms and vintage sewing machines. Tanuki designs modern silhouettes with minimal details and pairs them with innovative denim fabrics with emphasis on slub and nep. Tanuki is all about creating innovative denim textures, but Tanuki's artisans have been around since the first pair of made-in-japan jeans. The "Tanuki” name refers to a traditional Japanese Yokai character that brings good luck and prosperity and is a symbol of transformation. This is what Tanuki wished for the denim industry: transformation that would bring prosperity to the traditions they wanted to preserve. So from that point on, they had a saying, every time they would make a successful innovation of a new fabric, they would say "Tanuki!".
