Kakishibu-Zome (Persimmon Tannin Dyeing) The Kakishibu-Zome is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique created entirely from natural materials. Its origins date back more than 900 years to the Heian period. Historically, garments dyed with persimmon tannin were worn by samurai, mountain ascetics, and others who valued its distinctive reddish-brown color and practical properties. Persimmon tannin has long been used not only as a dye but also as a traditional medicinal ingredient, and is known for its natural antibacterial and deodorizing qualities.

Often referred to as a "sun-dyeing" process, persimmon tannin dyeing continues to evolve after the dyeing is complete. Exposure to sunlight and air gradually oxidizes the tannin, deepening the color and creating a rich patina over time. The way the color changes with wear and age, developing a unique character for each piece, is one of the defining attractions of this traditional dye. The persimmon tannin used for this garment is made from fermented persimmons that have been aged for more than three years.

The fabric is repeatedly immersed in the dye, hand-wrung, and dried under direct sunlight. Through this labor-intensive process, a deep and complex color is achieved. Rather than pursuing a perfectly uniform finish, the subtle variations in tone and texture created through hand-dyeing are embraced as part of the beauty of the craft. Such expression can only be achieved by artisans with a deep understanding of persimmon tannin dyeing. We invite you to experience the unique character and natural beauty of persimmon tannin dyeing, one of Japan's most enduring traditional dyeing techniques.
