Known for its precision, Printed Kasuri produces patterns so detailed they are often mistaken for woven designs. The process—from thread treatment to weaving and stencil dyeing—is carried out entirely by the skilled hands of Japanese artisans. Studio D’Artisan’s signature pig motifs are subtly hidden throughout, adding a touch of whimsy. Immerse yourself in a unique blend of Japanese artistry and craftsmanship through this thoughtfully designed shirt.

Japanese manga (Japanese cartoon) culture has developed in a way that’s truly unique in the world. At its roots lies what is often called Japan’s oldest manga : Chōjū Giga.
The literal translation of Choju Giga is the“caricature of birds and beast”. This famous scroll features lively and charming animals—rabbits, frogs, and others—drawn without any text, yet the playful scenes tell a clear story that anyone can follow. It is said to have been created about 1,200 years ago, making it a remarkable early example of visual
storytelling. At dartisan, we have taken inspiration from Chōjū Giga to create an original fabric using the Printed Kasuri, a traditional Japanese dyeing and weaving technique. This fabric celebrates Japan’s rich heritage of craftsmanship and storytelling.

The Printed Kasuri is a uniquely Japanese dyeing technique that originated about a century ago in Nigata Prefecture. It uses a special dye that reacts to oxidation to bring out its color. By applying stencils with a paste containing oxidizing or neutralizing agents, artisans can create intricate patterns—without using heat—making it an environmentally friendly and gentle method. The resulting textiles are so finely detailed that they closely resemble woven kasuri. Every step, from preparing the threads to weaving and stencil dyeing, is carried out by the expert hands of skilled craftsmen. Today, however, only a single workshop in Japan continues to preserve and practice this rare technique. The Printed Kasuri blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with time-honored craftsmanship, offering a quiet yet enduring beauty. We invite you to discover the subtle charm of this exceptional textile.
