The base fabric is a cotton-linen canvas, washed for extremely long time using a special washer to bring out a natural wrinkled texture. The result is a soft, lightweight feel with the look of something well-worn and broken in.
The garment is dyed using Amami Dorozome, a traditional mud-dyeing technique from Amami Oshima that relies only on natural materials found in the region. This process produces subtle, earthy tones with a rich depth and quiet strength—something that can’t be replicated with chemical dyes.Nut buttons are used.

Amami Dorozome (mud dyeing) is an ancient dyeing technique rooted in the culture of Amami Ōshima, a southern island of Japan.

While its exact origins remain unclear, historical records from as far back as the Nara period (over 1,300 years ago) mention that brown-toned silk fabrics were offered to temples in the capital, believed to have come from southern islands like Amami.

This traditional method uses dye extracted from the Techiki tree (sharinbai=wheel plum tree), a native plant that takes 10 to 30 years to mature. The yarn or fabric is repeatedly soaked in the tree’s boiled extract and then immersed in the island’s rich, iron-laden mud—formed by geological layers dating back 1.5 million years. This cycle is repeated many times to fix the color.

Relying entirely on the island’s natural resources—without any chemical dyes—Amami mud dyeing produces soft, earthy, and deeply complex tones. The result is a warm, organic color with a subtle yet powerful presence, something that cannot be replicated by modern synthetic methods.

This craft carries the spirit of Amami’s people and the wisdom of nature, passed down over centuries. It is, in every sense, a gift from the earth—nurtured by time, tradition, and the island’s abundant natural beauty.

"Craftsmanship with quality and integrity"

Influenced by French workwear and American vintage, "STUDIO D'ARTISAN" was the first to reissue vintage jeans in Japan in 1979. The brand's guiding principle is not to reproduce" old clothes, but to "reconstrust" them anew, incorporating the essence of the period and production background that can only be found in Japan. SDA will continue to create and pursue new values while keeping an eye on the next generation of vintage.
