Mastermade in Japan
These shorts are made from our original Indigo Noragi Sashiko Dobby fabric, woven with three shades of indigo slub yarn to recreate the gently faded look of timeworn garments. The varied stitches running vertically and horizontally give the fabric the warmth and irregular charm of hand stitching. With every wash, the fabric shrinks slightly to reveal a unique texture of ridges and depth. Cut in a clean, above-the-knee length, the silhouette feels both classic and contemporary. Natural nut buttons add a refined, earthy detail. Enjoy the evolving character of indigo as these shorts age beautifully with wear.
In an era when kimono were worn daily in Japan, cotton garments were a precious necessity for everyday life. They were essential for comfort and protection, cherished and cared for deeply. When clothing became worn or torn, it wasn’t discarded. Instead, people lovingly repaired and reinforced it with patches and stitches, extending its life as long as possible.
These lovingly mended garments—known as Noragi—embodied both practical ingenuity and an aesthetic all their own. Their hand-stitched textures and improvised combinations of fabric gave birth to a warmth and beauty that was entirely unique.
Studio D’Artisan has reimagined this traditional spirit with a modern touch through its original Indigo Noragi Sashiko Dobby fabric. Woven from three types of indigo slub yarn, the fabric captures a softly faded depth of color—like a well-worn piece passed down through generations. The intersecting stitches vary in direction and type, evoking the warmth and spontaneity of hand sewing. The fabric is designed to shrink with each wash, creating a richly textured, three-dimensional surface over time. This collection is a contemporary tribute to Japan’s folk workwear heritage—fusing time-honored aesthetics with the pride and precision of modern Japanese craftsmanship. The spirit and aesthetic sense of Noragi, a traditional Japanese workwear, has been reconstructed with the skill and pride of modern craftsmen -- the unique and distinctive "INDIGO NORAGI SASHIKO" has been born.
"Craftsmanship with quality and integrity"
Influenced by French workwear and American vintage, "STUDIO D'ARTISAN" was the first to reissue vintage jeans in Japan in 1979. The brand's guiding principle is not to reproduce" old clothes, but to "reconstrust" them anew, incorporating the essence of the period and production background that can only be found in Japan. SDA will continue to create and pursue new values while keeping an eye on the next generation of vintage.
