This denim is crafted using the traditional "Awa-Shoai Dyeing Method," a technique in which Japan takes great pride. Achieving a deep, rich color requires multiple cycles of "dyeing," "squeezing," and "drying," a meticulous process carried out by skilled artisans. The weft yarn is made from hand-dyed "Kaki-shibu Some" (persimmon tannin-dyed) yarn. This hand-dyed yarn, thicker than its machine-dyed counterpart, imparts a distinct texture and irregularity to the fabric, setting it apart from standard 16.5oz denim. This silhouette is a classic straight fit.

The Traditional Craft of Japan That Inspires the World: Awa Shoai Dyeing Technique The indigo dyeing of Tokushima Prefecture, known as Awa Shoai Dyeing, uses Awa indigo as its raw material and employs the "fermentation vat" method. This technique is distinguished by its ability to produce a variety of shades, including blue, red, purple, and black indigo, rather than a single blue hue.

Because deep colors cannot be achieved in a single dyeing process, artisans repeat the steps of "dyeing," "wringing," and "drying" countless times. The actual value of Awa Shoai Dyeing is revealed after about 30 rounds of washing. Discordant tones are removed with each wash, and a harmonious, vibrant color emerges. Additionally, the unique fragrance of this indigo dye is said to have insect-repellent properties.

As the seasons pass, the scent deepens, offering wearers a sense of tranquility and comfort. Hand-dyed "kakishibu" (persimmon tannin) threads are used for the weft threads. Known as "sun-dried dyeing," this method allows the threads to oxidize through exposure to sunlight and air, resulting in a rich, evolving color over time. Hand-dyed threads are thicker than machine-dyed ones, giving the denim fabric a distinctive texture with an unevenness that sets it apart from typical 16.5oz denim.

The interplay between the Awa indigo-dyed warp threads and the kakishibu-dyed weft threads creates an intensely captivating color that strongly draws the viewer's eye. The colors embody a profound natural harmony, exuding a beauty with incredible depth. This is the ultimate "Japanese denim," crafted through the Awa Shoai Dyeing technique. Savor the extraordinary fading and texture that can only be experienced with this denim.

"Craftsmanship with quality and integrity"

Influenced by French workwear and American vintage, "STUDIO D'ARTISAN" was the first to reissue vintage jeans in Japan in 1979. The brand's guiding principle is not to reproduce" old clothes, but to "reconstrust" them anew, incorporating the essence of the period and production background that can only be found in Japan. SDA will continue to create and pursue new values while keeping an eye on the next generation of vintage.
