The GL3 loom, built by Toyoda Automatic Loom Works over half a century ago, was Japan’s first shuttle loom. Today, there are no replacement parts for this machine. When something breaks, parts must be salvaged from scrapped machines—making maintenance a slow and delicate process.
The GL3 can weave only about 5 meters of fabric per hour. It’s inefficient, labor-intensive, and difficult to operate. But what it produces is something no modern loom can replicate: denim with the raw, rugged character of workwear from decades past. There's a roughness and authenticity in the fabric that feels like it came straight out of the mid-20th century.
To bring out the best of the GL3’s unique weaving characteristics, we developed a custom denim using Studio D’Artisan’s original recipe—from yarn thickness to slub texture, and thread count in both warp and weft. This denim can't be mass-produced or perfectly uniform. Instead, it has a distinct irregular texture and wild, uneven character—something that modern high-speed looms simply can't achieve.

Influenced by French workwear and American vintage, "STUDIO D'ARTISAN" was the first to reissue vintage jeans in Japan in 1979. The brand's guiding principle is not to reproduce" old clothes, but to "reconstrust" them anew, incorporating the essence of the period and production background that can only be found in Japan. SDA will continue to create and pursue new values while keeping an eye on the next generation of vintage.
