PIERRE JEANNERET DESIGN MADE BY PHANTOM HANDS

'Phantom Hands' is a metaphor for generations of artisans whose contributions manifest in each piece of furniture we make. Phantom Hands makes handcrafted, design-driven contemporary furniture. Our workshop in Bangalore, India is an ecosystem of skilled carpenters, wood polishers, cane weavers, upholsterers, and tailors from craft communities across the country. We work with wood, fabrics, cane, metal, etc., and collaborate with furniture and textile designers to create collections that build on the heritage of Indian craftsmanship and design. Our furniture is a culmination of centuries of craft knowledge and skills, passed on from generation to generation. The name 'Phantom Hands' is an homage to the legacy of these past artisans whose contributions manifest in each piece we make. - Phantom Hands

TORCHIN & COCOLAN YAME SHOUCHIN WASHI PAPER AND ASH BASE BATTERY LANTERNS FOR TEMPO

This month, o-Bon chōchin (paper lantern) artisans Shiraki Kougei announced the release of Torchin, a series of portable, contemporary lamps crafted under the consulting and production advice of Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten and in collaboration with design unit Tent. Based in Fukuoka Prefecture, Shiraki Kougei specializes in the regional Yame style of o-Bon chōchin — washi paper-covered lanterns with hibukuro (firebox) frames of spiraled split-bamboo strips or wire. The new Torchin series translates five simple geometric shapes — circle, oblong, oval, square and bell — into three-dimensional firebox forms that echo Yame ellipsoids. A simple cylindrical beechwood stand transforms each Torchin into a table lamp that can also be held like a torch. Nothing interrupts Tent’s contemporary design of clean lines. The shade’s translucent washi is left white, a touch-sensitive round button is positioned to neatly cover the firebox opening at the top and, as a rechargeable lamp with a running time of up to 35 hours on its dimmest setting, no unsightly cable is needed when in use. - The Japan Times

HASAMI POCERLAIN - RAW, MODULAR, STACKABLE, MADE IN HASAMI, NAGASAKI, JAPAN

The charm of HASAMI PORCELAIN lies in the feeling when the vessel touches your hand or mouth. Compared to porcelain, it has a tighter, sharper feel, and a softer, more organic feel than regular porcelain. The matte texture and color brought about by the unique texture of the material will not feel out of place when paired with any kind of food, and will complement your food and drinks. Unlike tableware that is mass-produced in a single factory, HASAMI PORCELAIN tableware requires manual work in many processes, including glazing. The division of labor has been passed down in the Hasami region's pottery industry since ancient times, and multiple kilns are involved in the production, and the environment inside the kilns changes depending on the season and temperature. For this reason, each piece of HASAMI PORCELAIN has its own individuality, with the base material being reddish and the texture of the glaze changing. There may be slight individual differences in form and size. Such individuality is unique to ceramics and creates a unique landscape. Therein lies the inherent charm of ceramics, which is not found in uniform industrial products.

KAMARO'AN, TAIWANESE DESIGN HOUSE AND HIGH END ACCESSORIES CRAFT BRAND

Weaving spans all our products, likely because body memory holds a special importance in tribal culture. In the past, there was no written language, so history and knowledge were passed down through oral tradition, songs, and physical labor. For instance, when Imay was young, her father taught her to dive, observing the sea, waves, and tides, and those memories are imprinted in her body. Weaving involves a similar physical memory—a way for younger generations to feel connected to their ancestors. - Kamaro'an

BUAISOU HAND-DYED INDIGO NORENS / CURTAINS AT TEMPO DESIGN STORE

To “thrive in the hometown of indigo dye,” BUAISOU was established in Kamiita-Cho, Tokushima Prefecture in 2015. All processes, which were traditionally divided into separate specializations, are carried out within BUAISOU; from cultivating the raw indigo, fermenting the indigo leaves (Sukumo), dyeing, designing, all the way to production. We also make efforts in introducing the charm of natural indigo through offering workshops and other various activities. Indigo dyeing is characterized by deep beautiful color and fastness. This is achieved using only indigo leaves, lye, bran, and shell lime. In 2018, we were able to realize our original dream of making hand-dyed indigo jeans. BUAISOU’s future goal is to grow our own cotton and weave it by ourselves.
