Introducing TOMAYA. STUDIO - Interview with the design-duo Tom & Maya

TOMAYA's positive contributions stem from our dedication to designing objects that not only serve a functional purpose but also create meaningful connections between people and the items they use daily. We focus on crafting timeless pieces from durable materials like wood, metal, and ceramics, ensuring they age gracefully and can be cherished for generations. By prioritizing quality over quantity, we encourage a more mindful lifestyle, where fewer but better-made objects take center stage—designed to be repaired, handed down, and integrated into life’s stories. - Tom & Maya

When did the brand start, what was the idea and philosophy in the beginning and has it changed with time?
Tom & Maya: Tomaya Design Studio began during our industrial design studies, where we discovered a shared creative language and synergy while collaborating on several projects. By challenging each other’s ideas, we consistently arrived at unique concepts, and even then, we dreamed of starting a studio together. After graduating, alongside our decision to share our lives, we made that dream a reality by founding Tomaya. Our design philosophy has always centered on viewing design as an emotional platform to express ideas and fulfill needs. We believe the objects surrounding us are more than functional; they are companions in everyday life. This belief in creating lasting, meaningful pieces has remained constant over time, and while our journey has evolved, our commitment to design enduring, beautiful objects has only grown stronger.

What is your perspective on the natural power of raw-materials, different types of wood and metals used for making the products?

We have a deep appreciation for the natural power of raw materials and their honesty. These materials hold an inherent strength and beauty that allow them to age gracefully over time, becoming even more valuable as they develop character. Each material brings a sense of permanence and durability to our designs, which is essential to creating products that can be cherished for generations. We carefully select these elements not just for their high quality, but for their ability to connect with users on a deeper level, ensuring that every piece feels timeless and enduring.

What is your favorite type of wood to work with? Which one is best to the touch, which is best to the eyes, and best natural fragrance?

We don’t have a single favorite type of wood to work with, as each species brings its own unique character, almost like a fingerprint that tells the story of the material from forest to workshop. The choice of wood often depends on the needs of the design, the narrative we want to convey, and how the wood will interact with the form.

That said, Oak and Ash are two types of woods we frequently choose for their versatility and the way their fibers adapt to different shapes, giving each piece a one-of-a-kind feel. Oak, with its rich texture and deep grain, is both visually striking and pleasing to the touch. Ash, on the other hand, has a softer feel and lighter color, which adds a subtle elegance to the design. Both woods age beautifully, and their natural fragrance enhances the sensory experience of working with them.

Describe to us the positive contributions that TOMAYA makes to the world.

Our thoughtful design process extends beyond aesthetics to sustainability. We carefully select raw materials, including responsibly harvested wood and paper, certified by the FSC, to minimize environmental impact. From the product itself to its packaging, we aim to honor the rawness and authenticity of each material, all while promoting eco-conscious practices. By combining timeless design with sustainable production, we aim to elevate the beauty of everyday moments and foster a deeper appreciation for the simple, lasting things in life.

Describe your design process, do you like to sketch by hand on paper, do you use 3D models?

Our design process is adaptable and varies with each project, but it typically begins with open discussions where we brainstorm ideas, whether inspired by a client brief or our own creative vision. Each design has its own unique needs, so the approach to form development differs accordingly. Sometimes we lean towards a digital exploration of shapes and configurations, while other times, we take a more traditional route, sketching on paper to work through ideas in their most preliminary form. We also find that taking a break, like stepping out for a coffee, often helps new ideas to surface. Once we’ve identified the key concept, we come together to refine and develop it in the studio, ensuring it aligns with our design philosophy and meets our high standards before becoming the final product.

Are you more influenced by the past of the future? Or equally both?

We are equally influenced by both the past and the future. We draw inspiration from the past, embracing timeless truths in design and craftsmanship that have stood the test of time. This allows us to create pieces that avoid trends, reinforcing the idea that our objects are meant to last for generations. At the same time, we look to the future, considering how our designs can adapt and remain relevant in an ever-changing world. This balance ensures that our creations remain both rooted in tradition and forward-thinking, designed to endure beyond fleeting trends.

Does the concept of natural living, slow life, living a minimal lifestyle with high quality goods, owning fewer but better quality things that are repairable, fit with the philosophy of TOMAYA?

Absolutely! TOMAYA’s philosophy is deeply aligned with the principles of natural living, slow living, and a minimalist lifestyle focused on high-quality, long-lasting goods. At the heart of our approach is the creation of objects that not only endure but also become integral companions in daily life, fostering personal connections and memories. Every design decision we make stems from a thoughtful narrative that encourages people to pause and re-examine the everyday objects surrounding them.

We believe that the relationship with objects is forged in the small, intimate details—whether it’s the way a glass is held, a simple act that reflects a deeper, personal connection. Each person interacts with objects in their own unique way, and we design with that openness in mind. Our pieces invite individuals to create their own rituals and connections, ensuring that the object adapts to their lives and forms part of their personal story.

Do you have any special collaborations with other brands and designers along the way?

We are very much about building relationships, whether it’s with the objects we design or the people we work with. That's why we choose to collaborate with individuals and brands who inspire us, communicate well, and bring positive energy. We've been fortunate to work with some amazing partners along the way. From the local store PRAT LIVING, where every meeting with owners Carmit and Dori Redlich is a source of inspiration, to manufacturers like DECOTECH, and partners such as ESSENTIA and VMV. We're also excited about our ongoing collaboration with TEMPO and have several new, exciting partnerships in the works that we can’t wait to reveal!
